Alternate Marketing Techniques for Visual Artists

I Did It Using Internet

Internet Is Like the Real World, Only Better

I figured the World Wide Web was the way to go. It’s universal, inexpensive, visually powerful and growing in acceptance day by day. Here’s what I did, and here’s what happened:

  1. Well frankly I’ve seen no direct sales from my internet site, however I use it as an electronic portfolio.

I’ll go into a non-traditional space, and leave my business card with the owner or manager about showing work there. I’ve always had some response, not always from an email, which i push as the best way to get me, but often I go back in a week or two and see if they’ve looked at the site and their response.

So internet site as a portfolio presentation – often it’s just enough to get a call back to show really work, from one of the themes/suites of works i’ve got posted.

  3. I have had the same experience as Timothy Burns – I’ve had a website up for at least 5 years – total sales directly from this has been 1 – which in fact was a contract to publish one of my paintings as a greeting card. This was a successful and rewarding experience, not so much financially but in advertising exposure. However, the indirect sales are not easy to determine as the website makes for excellent exposure. The traffic to my website is generally over 10,000 visitors per month and I often receive comments through e-mail. I also often receive enquiries from obvious art scams and vanity galleries which of course are very annoying.
Treat the website as a great place to post a portfolio – just don’t expect a lot of real purchasing enquiries – and beware of all the scams!
